Slope and Intercept

Ms. Mayo would like her students to explore the relationship between the slopes of perpendicular lines and parallel lines.  Working in a collaborative document using Google Docs, she has students try to write the equations of two parallel lines and then two perpendicular lines.  Once students have completed their equations, students from other groups speculate on whether the equations are correct by using the comments feature within Google Docs.

Students then graph the lines using the online graphing calculator Desmos to check their work.  They then try to adjust their equations accordingly.

Using the Forums feature on her LEARN page, Ms. Mayo then has the students complete a learning log entry about what changing the slop of the line will do to the appearance of the graph and about the relationship between slopes of parallel and perpendicular lines.

For homework, she has her class complete an independent practice tutorial on the Khan Academy website on calculating the slope of a line.
