I think this lesson would fall under the Active:  Adaptation matrix because students are using Google Maps and pinning locations of mountain ranges and oceans where earthquakes have occurred.  I think this lesson did not help students understand how plate tectonics work.  This lesson showed students the damages an earthquake can cause and the regions where earthquakes happen.  To improve this lesson I would show a short video on plate tectonics and I would give students an assignment that would have them simulate an earthquake.  Students would observe plate tectonics in action and what happens on the surface.  This simulation would allow students to understand how they work and why earthquakes happen.  I would use the following websites with animations and simulations:
