January 6-March 16, 2014-Perseverance and Survival: A Long Walk to Water. The assignments are listed as Tasks in the file titled A Long Walk to Water. It will take the class 1 or 2 days to finish each Task. If you are absent, in ISS or OSS, please open the Tasks to determine where you left off. Then, complete that Task and the Bell Work, located in the Bell Work folder, for the same time.
October 15-December 19, 2013: Utopian and Dystopian Societies. The students will read 5 texts: The Giver, The Pedestrian, There Will Come Soft Rains, The Lottery. The students will complete a Vocabulary PPT with text-specific words from The Giver. Students will write compare and contrast argumentative essays (2-5 paragraphs) to prove which text is most realistic to a utopian society.
September 30-October 4: Students will take notes from the Elements of Literature PowerPoint (in the folder titled Elements of Literature). Students will complete Diagram of Plot "Mountain" graphic organizer for a variety of fiction stories: La Llorona, Cinderella, The Three Pigs, Charles and John Henry. After reading La Llorona, students will summarize the plot by creating a 4-square cartoon. (Templates for Diagram of Plot "Mountain" and 4-square cartoon are on this webpage and in the file titled Elements of Literature.)
On Tuesday, students will complete the Benchmark Test by logging into Learn and thenPowerSchool. On Wednesday, students will complete RAPS360 testing. Each day, when students finish the on-line tests, they will continue to write and then revise their 5 paragraph argumentative essay.
September 23-27: Students will write a 5-paragraph argumentative essay with a 3-point claim. Teacher will guide students through paragraph 1 and 2 which students will use as models for paragraphs 3-5.
September 16-20: Students will independently prepare EBCs, complete organizers, learn the elements of an argumentative essay and begin writing an argumentative essay. The argumentative essay is due on Friday, September 27, 2013.
September 9-13, 2013: Students will write Cornell Notes about Evidence Based Claims (EBC). Students will gather evidence for their claim and complete 2 graphic organizers for creating claims (Forming EBC and Making EBC). Finally students will evaluate the claims and evidence based upon checklists and class discussions during Socratic Seminar.
September 3-6, 2013: Students will write Cornell Notes about Text Structure for a comparative essay (compare and contrast). Students will organize notes and draw conclusions about Text 5 To Build a Fire and Text 6 The North Pole Chapter 23. On Friday, students will use their notes to write a 5 paragraph essay that compares and contrasts the two texts. The compare and contrast essay is due on Monday, September 9, 2013.
